STATESVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Investigators with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office say they have seized $312,000 in cash during two recent traffic stops on Interstate 77.

Local media outlets report Sheriff Darren Campbell said while no arrests have been made, “Operation Tar Heel Gauntlet” run by his office and Homeland Security agents is continuing.

According to investigators, they seized $160,000 in cash on Oct. 30 from a vehicle stopped for a traffic violation on I-77 south. Campbell said a police dog alerted officers to the presence of narcotics, and he said officers found a duffel bag with 16 bundles of packaged U.S. bills wrapped in thick black tape.

On Oct. 26, investigators seized $152,000 in cash from the driver of a rented vehicle which also had been stopped for a traffic violation.
