LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti endorsed fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton for president. And then he didn’t. And then he really did.

A statement issued through the mayor’s office on Thursday quoted Garcetti as saying Clinton understands the challenges and opportunities facing the nation’s cities, has a passion for civil rights and wants to tackle economic inequality.

But an hour later, the mayor’s office issued a curt notice that the endorsement statement was sent in error. After that, a new statement was issued by Garcetti’s re-election campaign reiterating the initial endorsement.

It’s illegal to use public resources for election purposes, which is why the initial notice from the mayor’s office had to be retracted and replaced by one from the 2017 campaign.
