LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A former Michigan State University accountant has been sentenced to a year in jail for embezzling nearly $100,000 from two youth sports leagues.

John Ayers of Lansing was sentenced Wednesday to 12 months in jail and at least three years of probation. The Lansing State Journal (https://on.lsj.com/1P9V2Mp ) reports that the judge told Ayers the remainder of his jail time will be suspended if he gets a full-time job within the first 30 days of his sentence.

Ayers also was ordered to pay $97,000 in restitution to the Tri-County Youth Sports League and the Red Cedar Basketball League. He brought a $47,000 check with him to court and plans to pay back the rest of the money he stole by working as a truck driver.

His sentence is set to begin Thursday.
