NORTH CANTON, Ohio (AP) - A northeast Ohio man has pleaded guilty to charges related to what authorities say was a scam that involved him soliciting donations after falsely telling people he’d been diagnosed with cancer and other illnesses.

Forty-one-year-old William Treacle of North Canton is being held in Stark County Jail after entering the pleas on Wednesday. North Canton police said in a statement that Treacle reportedly collected over $10,000 by soliciting donations through GoFundMe and a social media site called “Help Our Hero William Treacle.”

Police say an investigation that began in February discovered that Treacle had forged documents about his medical treatment. No sentencing date is listed in online court records.

An attorney for Treacle said Wednesday that his client is remorseful but would not comment further.
