WASHINGTON (AP) - The new U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia says the investigation into the 2010 campaign of former mayor Vincent Gray is one of his “top priorities” and he hopes to make a decision on whether to charge Gray “as expeditiously as possible.”

Gray has been under investigation for more than 4 ½ years. Prosecutors have said in court that Gray knew about an effort to funnel illegal money into his campaign. He rejected a plea deal more than a year ago, and prosecutors are facing pressure to either charge him or abandon the probe.

U.S. Attorney Channing Phillips says in his statement that he’s in the process of becoming fully briefed on the investigation. Court dates for conspirators in the campaign scheme have been pushed back to mid-December.
