FLORENCE, Ariz. (AP) - Arizona authorities have arrested 21 people and seized 40 bales of marijuana in a bust they say is tied to the Sinaloa drug cartel.

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu says the eight-hour bust began at 2:30 a.m. Thursday about 70 miles north of the Mexico border. Deputies found the drugs during traffic stops, routine patrols and while helping U.S. Border Patrol.

Babeu says at least 40 drug smugglers managed to get away and called the discoveries further evidence of Mexican cartels’ continued smuggling operations. He says the arrests were made in an area known as a hotbed for such activity.

Border Patrol agents asked Pinal County for help when they saw 40 suspected smugglers walking through a wash Thursday morning. Authorities arrested 16 members of the group during a three-hour trek through rugged terrain.
