DETROIT (AP) - A downtown Detroit building housing some Wayne County government offices has been evacuated after a masked man left a suspicious metal package outside.

Employees and visitors were ordered out of the Guardian Building Friday morning.

Authorities say the masked man who appeared to be dressed as a construction worker got out of an older model black Jeep Cherokee about 9:30 a.m. Friday. The shoebox-sized package was set down near Griswold and Woodward Avenue.

An off-duty Detroit police officer reported finding the package about 10 minutes later. Police Chief James Craig told reporters “open me” was written on it.

The police bomb squad was called in and the package was moved to a west side park where it was to be detonated.

The building reopened just after noon.
