MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A corrections officer has been stabbed by an inmate at the St. Clair Correctional Facility in Springville.

The Alabama Department of Correction said the stabbing happened Thursday evening as inmates were returning to their cells after dinner.

The prison system said the officer was trying to control a physically aggressive inmate when two others attacked him from behind. A makeshift knife was used in the attack.

The officer was treated and released at an off-site medical facility.

The maximum security prison has been in an unfavorable spotlight in the last two years because of violence. Four inmates were killed in a 14-month period at the prison.

Three people were arrested last month for trying to throw guns, drugs and cellphones onto the prison grounds.
