MOUNT PLEASANT, Pa. (AP) - A retired state trooper must stand trial on charges he had sex with a 13-year-old girl after meeting her on Facebook and exchanging sexually explicit pictures with her.

Fifty-year-old James Boggs, of Mount Pleasant, waived his right to a preliminary hearing Thursday.

Boggs retired in 2011, last working out of the New Stanton barracks, which patrols the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Police say the relationship escalated to the point that Boggs and the girl performed sex acts on one another after Boggs picked her up in January 2014 and took her to his home. The girl told police she eventually went to Boggs’ home every month, and would spend weekends when his family was away.

Boggs’ attorney says waiving the hearing was the “first stage” of the criminal process.
