RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) - The family of a Long Island man who hanged himself in a jail last year is suing the agencies that arrested and detained him.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/1iHhD4Q ) the wrongful death lawsuit was filed last month by the mother of Scott Yarwood. The 34-year-old man was found hanging in his jail cell in November 2014, a day after he was arrested and charged with menacing and criminal mischief. He died four days later.

Family attorney Laurence Jeffery Weingard says authorities knew about Yarwood’s mental illness and suicidal tenancies from previous arrests. The lawsuit says the sheriff’s department failed to properly assess him as a suicide risk.

Representatives from Suffolk County and its police and sheriff’s departments declined to comment.
