AKRON, Ohio (AP) - An Akron high school music teacher who was fired after posting a racial slur on Facebook two years ago says the incident ruined his life and caused his daughter to be bullied in school.

David Spondike appeared on Steve Harvey’s national talk show on Wednesday to publicly apologize and insist he’s not a racist. The show focused on the theme “Race: Are We Too Sensitive?”

The 53-year-old Firestone High School teacher was terminated in 2013 after posting a racially charged rant about the behavior of a black youth during Halloween trick-or-treating in his neighborhood.

Spondike has since published a book about his experience called “The Accidental Racist.”

Harvey, a black comedian, told Spondike he deserves a second chance and gave his “stamp of forgiveness.”
