CANTON, Ohio (AP) - The former director of a Canton funeral home has been sentenced to a month in jail and five years of probation for stealing about $85,000 from clients who paid for prearranged funeral services.

The Repository in Canton (https://bit.ly/1kxbrNW ) reports that 62-year-old Robert Lewis, former owner and director of Welch-Sekeres-Lewis Funeral Home, was convicted of felony grand theft in October.

Prosecutors say Lewis received payment from about 20 clients between 2006 and 2012, but he disregarded his legal obligation to place the money into a trust or insurance fund.

Lewis testified in court that it wasn’t his intention to steal from the victims, but he needed the money to cover operating expenses and had planned to repay it later.
