ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - A little girl is back with her mother after police say her father had the child in his car while he robbed a St. Petersburg convenience store.

St. Petersburg police spokeswoman Yolanda Fernandez said Friday that officers determined the child’s mother was not involved with the crime, and the 18-month-old girl was returned to her.

Police responded to the Quickstop store Thursday following reports of an armed robbery. Witnesses described the suspect’s car, and officers made a traffic stop minutes later.

Officers said 30-year-old Edward Eric Melendez had a mask and gun in the car, along with his daughter. He was arrested and faces charges of robbery, felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and child endangerment.

Jail records didn’t indicate whether he has a lawyer.
