JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Federal prosecutors say the president of a former Carteret County-based ambulance service has pleaded guilty to perjury in connection with false health care claims.

Local media outlets report 35-year-old Jaime Leonard Smith of Morehead City entered her plea Thursday following a three-year investigation into activities at the former Crystal Coast Medical Transport.

Smith and the company were investigated after employees were videotaped transporting patients in company ambulances when those patients were able to walk or use wheelchairs.

Prosecutors said Smith altered forms to be filled out by doctors and meant to indicate that a patient’s ambulance trip was medically required.

Smith faces up to 5 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000 and restitution. No sentencing date has been announced.
