TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey man who killed his mother by striking her with an ax and cutting her throat has been sentenced to 30 years in state prison.

Brian Cassidy, of Lakewood, was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Wendel Daniels on Friday for the murder of 61-year-old Gail Conway. She was found dead in her bed in June 2013.

Cassidy pleaded guilty in August to striking his mother in the head with an ax, and then cutting her throat with a carpet cutting tool.

Officers went to check on Conway after co-workers reported she had not arrived at work. Her car was missing from her driveway when officers arrived, but police saw Cassidy driving it later that day and arrested him.

Cassidy has been in jail since his mother died.
