IPSWICH, Mass. (AP) - The operator of a lobster boat has abandoned ship after the vessel caught fire and sank off Crane Beach in Ipswich.

The Coast Guard says the operator of the lobster boat Dawn Breaker called for help around 9:30 a.m. stating he was abandoning the 28-foot ship because it was on fire. The man, who the Coast Guard did not identify, had tried to fight the fire with a portable extinguisher.

He jumped into the water after donning his immersion suit, radioing his location and activating his personal locator beacon. He was picked up by another boater in less than 15 minutes.

The Coast Guard says the fire apparently started when the engine overheated. The guard called the lobsterman a “true professional mariner” who did everything right after the mishap.
