LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - A Kansas woman has been charged after she fled to Europe with her 9-year-old and 11-year-old daughters.

Samantha Elmer was charged Friday with two counts of aggravated interference with parental custody, the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office said.

Authorities say Elmer and the girls were was last seen Oct. 26 in Lawrence, the Lawrence Journal World (https://bit.ly/20Af5HT ) reported. The girls’ father, Justin Bush of Smithville, Missouri, who shares joint custody with Elmer, says Elmer moved the girls to Lawrence about two days before they disappeared. He said he contacted Elmer after the girls missed several days of school and Elmer told him the girls were ill.

After his daughters missed four more days of school with no doctor’s note, Bush contacted Lawrence police, who traced Elmer to Europe.

Sgt. Trent McKinley says missing person profiles have been created on Interpol, which assists in solving international crimes, and that the Lawrence Police Department is contact with the FBI, which is dealing with authorities abroad.

Lawrence police said Elmer rented a car in Kansas City and then drove with her daughters to Chicago, where Elmer dropped the car off at O’Hare International Airport. According to the district attorney’s office, Elmer and the two children boarded a Turkish Airline flight to Vienna via Istanbul. It unknown where they may have ultimately traveled to.

Bush says Elmer left ahead of a custody hearing and a trial on theft charges that was to begin Nov. 2.

Bush now has an emergency passport in case his daughters are found.

“Once I get that call, I’ll be on the next flight to Europe,” Bush said.
