WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Riverfront Development Corp. Executive Director Michael Purzycki has announced that he will run to become the mayor of Wilmington.

Purzycki, a Democrat, made his announcement Thursday. He says he has formed a campaign committee and launched a campaign website, mikeformayor2016.com. He joins a growing field seeking to unseat Mayor Dennis P. Williams, who is running for a second term.

Purzycki has run the Riverfront Development Corp. for nearly two decades, and says he led efforts to turn the area from an industrial wasteland into a thriving corporate and entertainment district. He says that experience will help him lead the city.

Purzycki is the seventh Democrat to enter the race. No Republican candidates have entered so far. The Democratic primary is Sept. 13. The general election is Nov. 8, 2016.
