COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina reserve guard Doniyah Cliney will have wait a bit longer to start her college career after undergoing surgery on her right hand Friday.

Cliney injured herself in practice this week. The team had no timetable for Cliney’s return, saying only that the redshirt freshman was expected to be out for several weeks.

Cliney was part of the second-ranked Gamecocks’ 2014 recruiting class, which was rated No. 2 nationally. Cliney did not play last season. She spent the first semester working on academics before being allowed to practice with South Carolina in the spring.

The 6-foot guard from Newark, New Jersey, helped Malcolm X Shabazz High School to consecutive state titles in 2013 and 2014.

South Carolina opens the season Nov. 13 against No. 6 Ohio State.
