DOUGLAS, Ariz. (AP) - A southern Arizona rancher has been sentenced in federal court for an attack on a Border Patrol agent near Douglas.

Derek Garland was sentenced to eight months in prison and ordered to pay a $2,000 fine after pleading guilty to assault on a federal officer.

Authorities say the 48-year-old held an unholstered pistol and became belligerent after a Border Patrol agent pulled him over for tripping a sensor in an area near the U.S.-Mexico border that’s known for smuggling. The April 2014 incident was captured on video. Authorities say Garland used racial slurs and profanity against the agent.
