PHOENIX (AP) - Democratic state Sen. Barbara McGuire says she won’t seek her party’s nomination for the 1st Congressional District next year and will instead seek re-election to the Legislature.

McGuire said Friday that she decided not to run in the sprawling 1st District because her 85-year-old mother is seriously ill and she is her caregiver. She also said she has unfinished business in Legislative District 8.

The Kearny resident launched an exploratory committee in June as she considered whether to run for Congress.

McGuire’s decision leaves Tom O’Halleran as the only declared Democratic candidate. Five Republicans are seeking their party’s nomination.

The largely rural district leans Democratic but is seen as winnable by either party. It runs from Flagstaff to Marana and includes the Navajo Nation.
