WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) - The trial of a Cedar Rapids man accused killing a Waterloo man in December has been delayed.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports (https://bit.ly/1XUzu8e ) that attorneys for 26-year-old James Robert Ernst II requested a continuance to prepare for a brief hearing Monday in Black Hawk County District Court.

Ernst, who waived his speedy trial rights, told the court he preferred a January 2016 trial date. Prosecutors didn’t resist the delay.

The trial had been set to begin Nov. 10. It is now scheduled for Jan. 19.

Authorities say Ernst shot 23-year-old Orintheo Campbell Jr. following a Dec. 6 fight that escalated. Campbell was taken to a local hospital and later died of multiple gunshot wounds.
