WAVELAND, Miss. (AP) - Waveland police arrested a couple on child abuse charges, alleging the couple was using methamphetamine in the presence of their 5-year-old boy.

The Sun Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1Sv4gBI ) 29-year-old Jessica Hammond and her husband, 33-year-old Erik Hammond, each face a count of felony child abuse. Erik Hammond faces an additional charge of misdemeanor child abuse.

Police Chief Dave Allen says Wednesday’s arrests resulted from a joint-investigation by Waveland police and the Mississippi Department of Human Services into allegations of physical abuse of the couple’s child and use of drugs in the home.

Allen said the child tested positive for methamphetamine following a court-ordered drug analysis.

The case remains under investigation.

Online jail records did not list an attorney for the couple.
