WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts group is moving forward with plans to discuss building a ballpark to house the Pawtucket Red Sox.

The Telegram & Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1Sw9Bsv ) the nonprofit Canal District Alliance Inc. voted Thursday night to talk with the minor league team’s owners about possibly building a park in Worcester on the site of the former Wyman-Gordon complex, which was built over the abandoned Blackstone Canal.

The group wants the canal to be reopened as part of the plan. Initial designs show the Blackstone Canal filled with water as it appeared in the 1800s.

The team has played at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island since 1973 but its new owners want to move. They had previously considered relocating to Providence. The team’s current lease runs through the 2020 season.
