RENO, Nev. (AP) - The Kiowa Ponds are free of cars after a cleanup led to the recovery of six vehicles reported stolen between 1998 and 2007.

Divers joined authorities in cleaning the ponds Oct. 24 for Make A Difference Day.

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Bob Harmon said after a decade or two underwater, the vehicles don’t hold much evidentiary value. He said the discoveries at least answer where the cars ended up.

Two of the vehicles were reported stolen during winter months. Harmon said sheriff’s office statistics between 2010 and 2015 show December, January and February with the highest rates of vehicle thefts.

He said people should lock doors and watch vehicles that are left running to warm up in the mornings.
