CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y. (AP) - Debate continues over the future of the Chautauqua (shuh-TAW-kwuh) Institution’s historic Amphitheater.

On the agenda for this weekend’s board of trustees meeting is a vote on bids for the demolition and reconstruction of the structure where presidents and performers have appeared for more than 100 years.

The board voted in August to move ahead with the $33 million project, despite an outcry from preservationists. But opponents continue to lobby to save the original.

Supporters of the project say the new Amp will be more accessible and comfortable and will retain the look and feel of the current Amp.
