DELTONA, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say an off-duty police officer killed his uncle during a family fight at a Deltona home.

Volusia County Sheriff’s officials say DeLand Police Officer Bobby Harrelson, 51, said he was trying to protect his 76-year-old mother when he opened fire on Friday night. The Orlando Sentinel (https://tinyurl.com/pn4kbmg ) reports Harrelson said he tried unsuccessfully to break up the fight after his uncle, Raymond Davis, 68, started choking his mother.

No other details were released.
