GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) - The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office says a woman has died after falling down an elevator shaft at an antique store.

In a statement released to local media outlets, Coroner Dennis Fowler said 73-year-old Rae Patricia Gilmore of Gaffney died just after 2 p.m. Friday after falling two stories through an elevator shaft

Fowler said Gilmore was on the main floor of the store and attempted to take a freight elevator to the second floor. He said when Gilmore stepped forward, the elevator wasn’t there, and the woman fell 11 feet into the store’s basement. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fowler said an investigation will be conducted and will include looking at the elevator’s service records.

An autopsy was scheduled for Saturday morning.
