GARY, Ind. (AP) - Some city council members in Gary want more information about an 800-bed immigration detention facility proposed for property near the Gary Chicago International Airport.

The (Munster) Times reports (https://bit.ly/20Cw1NQ) the GEO Group, wants a zoning variance to build the facility. Council President Kyle Allen and Vice President Ron Brewer say they haven’t decided yet whether the project is a good idea.

The company says the facility would be a $65 million investment and would create more than 200 jobs. Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson supports the plan. The mayor says the facility could bring in about $1 million in annual property taxes.

Florida-based GEO Group operates correctional facilities in the United States and abroad. The American Civil Liberties Union has criticized the company for human rights violations.
