PHOENIX (AP) - The boys’ cross-country team at Hopi High School has run away with another win, maintaining the longest streak of consecutive victories in the nation.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association says the Hopi Bruins scored 59 points to defeat Many Farms and Pinon for the Division IV title at Saturday’s state cross-country championships.

No high school team in the country has been as dominant when it comes to winning consecutive championships. The Hopi boys’ team now has 26.

Running is deeply rooted in the northern Arizona tribe’s tradition as a way to carry messages and bless the reservation with rain. Tribal members regularly challenge each other to footraces, and running is prominent in ceremonies.

The Bruins are led by coach Rick Baker, who is known as “The Legend.”
