NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a Newark police officer fired a shot while pursuing a suspect, but no one was struck by the bullet.

The incident happened around 8 p.m. Friday, shortly after city police went to a Goble Street home as part of their search for a man wanted by police in Elizabeth. Authorities say the man fled on foot as officers approached the home, but was soon captured without further incident.

Essex County prosecutors would not release the officer’s name or say why the officer fired the shot. They also would not say why the man was being sought by police.

The prosecutor’s office will review the incident, which is standard procedure when a law enforcement officer discharges their weapon.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
