MACHIAS, Maine (AP) - One of the oldest buildings on the University of Maine at Machias is due to be razed.

A committee of the University of Maine System trustees has authorized spending up to $950,000 to demolish Kimball Hall, conduct abatement work and restore the site to campus green space.

The 102-year-old building was closed in February because of structural concerns. There are faculty offices, student gathering spaces and a dining area - but no classrooms or housing in the building.

Trustees are expected to give final approval later this month. If that happens, the building will remain vacant this winter, and demolition will begin in the summer.
