LEESBURG, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a man accused of stealing more than $17,000 from an account setup to raise money for the family of a deceased police officer has been arrested.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation tells multiple media outlets that 43-year-old David Hans Smith established a GoFundMe account to raise money for the funeral expenses and family of Pelham officer John Mucci, who died April 3. The GBI says Smith used the money for personal use, but not sure what he did with the funds.

The GBI says none of the donated money was given to Mucci’s family.

The GoFundMe account raised $19,320 with a portion going to the crowdfunding company. The page has been removed.

Smith was arrested Wednesday and charged with theft by taking.
