WHEELOCK, Vt. (AP) - Vermont state police say a Wheelock homeowner severely burned in fire that destroyed a portion the two-family home.

Firefighters were called to the scene on Sutton Road in Wheelock just before 10 p.m. Saturday. Police say the back portion of the home was engulfed in flames when they arrived.

Authorities say homeowner Larry Clark sustained severe burns and was later airlifted to a Boston hospital for treatment.

State police on Sunday who were at the scene Sunday trying to determine the cause of the fire say they found a man hiding in the attic area of an adjacent garage. He fled while being questioned.

Police say they suspect a portable generator being used at the time of the fire may have been the cause.
