HURRICANE, Utah (AP) - Authorities say the bodies of a 57-year-old woman and a dog have been found in an apartment that caught fire in southern Utah.

Police in the city of Hurricane say officers were able to help a 40-year-old man escape the apartment through a back door shortly after the fire broke out early Monday.

Police Sgt. Brandon Buell says the man was taken to a hospital in stable condition while firefighters extinguished the blaze.

Crews afterward discovered the bodies of the woman and the dog.

Buell says the bedridden woman had health problems and could not move without assistance.

Officials will conduct an autopsy to determine her cause of death.

Buell says investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire but don’t consider it suspicious.

Authorities have not released the identities of the man or woman but Buell says they were roommates.
