Last season: 23-11, lost in second NCAA tournament game.

Nickname: Bulldogs.

Coach: Chris Holtmann.

Conference: Big East.

Key Returners: Kellen Dunham is leading returning scorer in Big East (16.5 points) and looking to finish among top three scorers in school history; swingman Roosevelt Jones is one of conference’s most versatile players (12.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 31 steals, 21 blocks) and wants big senior season; center Andrew Chrabascz struggled with injuries late last season, still averaged 11.2 points and 3.6 rebounds.

Who Left: Point guard Alex Barlow graduated, leaving Butler without the glue to its team over the past three seasons; two-time Big East rebounding champion Kameron Woods also graduated.

The Skinny: Holtmann begins first season without the interim coaching title with big expectations and No. 24 ranking. There’s a solid nucleus with Dunham, Jones, Chrabascz and Tyler Lewis, a transfer from North Carolina State who will replace Barlow. More experience should help forwards Kelan Martin and Tyler Wideman become more productive. And though the up-tempo offense may not resemble traditional Bulldogs basketball, the results might.
