LA JOSE, Pa. (AP) - A coroner says a central Pennsylvania hunter bled to death after apparently shooting himself in the arm with his crossbow.

Clearfield County Coroner Michael Morris says the death of 53-year-old Richard Billetdeaux (BIL’-ah-doh) appears to be an accident. But state police were continuing to investigate in hopes of conclusively ruling out other causes.

The victim was part of a four-person hunting party, who had spread out to different parts of a state game lands in Chest Township, Clearfield County on Saturday.

Billetdeaux was found by another hunter about 12:30 p.m. without a pulse.

The coroner says an arrow from the crossbow severed an artery in Billetdeaux’s upper arm.
