SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Gov. Gary Herbert is appointing Judge John A. Pearce to be the newest justice on the state Supreme Court.

Herbert announced the pick on Monday. Utah’s Senate must approve the nomination.

The governor’s office says the Senate has 60 days to approve Pearce but the vote has not been scheduled yet.

Pearce currently serves as a judge on the Utah Court of Appeals. The governor named him to that post in 2013.

Pearce previously worked as general counsel to Herbert in the governor’s office.

He will replace Justice Jill Parrish, who left the state Supreme Court after she became a federal judge in Utah in August.
