SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) - A man who saw smoke coming from an eastern Pennsylvania house on his way to church is being commended for helping save a family trapped in a second floor apartment.

Neftali Feliciano tells The (Scranton) Times-Tribune (https://bit.ly/1PxBcJO ) was driving to church in Scranton on Sunday when he saw the smoke but no firefighters or police, which let him know he needed to do something.

He stood atop an SUV parked outside and helped bring the residents out through a window in the two-story home. Four adults and two children were inside the apartment, which was destroyed in Sunday morning’s blaze.

Emergency workers checked the family but there were no injuries.

Assistant Fire Chief Paul Triano says the family was lucky Feliciano showed up, adding “it would have been bad otherwise.”
