BOSTON (AP) - New University of Massachusetts President Marty Meehan is making a 325-mile, barnstorming trip across the state as part of inauguration week.

Meehan started his day at the Dartmouth campus at 7:30 a.m. Monday.

He is scheduled to arrive in Amherst at 10:45 a.m.; the medical school in Worcester at 1:30 p.m.; Lowell at 3:30 p.m. and Boston at 6 p.m.

The goal of the trip is to spotlight student-faculty accomplishments. Meehan will visit classes, meet with students and faculty members, tour science facilities and tap into other facets of campus life

Meehan will be formally inaugurated as the 27th president of the University of Massachusetts on Thursday.

A UMass spokesmen defended the $100,000 tab for inauguration week, telling the Boston Herald the money is coming from a private fund.
