MINOT, N.D. (AP) - A highway expansion project is being proposed between Belfield and Watford City.

The North Dakota Department of Transportation says the plan would expand about 62 miles of U.S. Highway 85 from two lanes to four.

DOT officials say the project is needed to safely accommodate the mix of industrial, agricultural and passenger traffic in the area.

Public meetings to explain the proposal are scheduled for Monday evening in Belfield and Tuesday evening in Watford City. The project will require permanent right of way and construction easements.

Comments on the project will be accepted until Dec. 2.
