HOUMA, La. (AP) - Terrebonne Parish is looking to add two levee projects to the proposed 2016 parish budget and five-year capital outlay.

The Courier reports (https://bit.ly/1WLMHxR) the proposed budget contains $13.9 million set aside for five-year capital outlay projects, approximately $2.2 million of that in projects slated for 2016. The $13.9 million in the 2016 budget is a decrease from the $22.4 million that was included in the 2015 budget for capital outlay projects.

The budget provides for all major projects, Terrebonne Parish president Michel Claudet said, and the need to maintain projects with large safety and economic impacts was taken into account when creating the budget.

The extension of Bayou Gardens Boulevard, which was adopted in the 2015 five-year capital outlay and picked up for 2016, accounts for $1.8 million. Major improvements to the parish prison makes up the remaining $435,000, parish chief financial officer Jamie Elfert said.

Work on the second phase of the $10 million project to extend Bayou Gardens Boulevard from Coteau Road to Bayou Blue Road is currently underway.

The Cedar Grove to Ashland Landfill Levee and the Suzie Canal North Levee extension, both costing around $3.8 million, were added the five-year capital outlay for 2017, 2018 and 2019. Money from the drainage tax fund and one-quarter percent capital sales tax, about $618,000 each per year, is expected to foot the cost.

The projects, which supplement the Morganza-to-the-Gulf levee system, are important to the Grand Caillou area as well as all of east Houma, Councilman Danny Babin said.

“That completes our interim levee system to supplement the Morganza because the Lake Boudreaux basin is such a big reservoir,” he said.
