DETROIT (AP) - Wayne County officials have approved a deal to construct a dock and fishing pier at a wildlife refuge along the Detroit River.

The Detroit News reports (https://detne.ws/1O0d54E ) Monday that county commissioners OK’d the use $500,000 from a parks fund and another $500,000 in a state Natural Resources grant for the project with the 20 cities and townships in the Downriver Community Conference.

Remaining funds for the $2.8 million project at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge Gateway in Trenton and Gibraltar are to come from other sources. The DTE Energy Foundation also has awarded $25,000 toward construction of the dock and pier.

Wayne County, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and others worked for nearly a decade on restoration of the Refuge Gateway. Located on the river’s Trenton Channel.
