ERIE, Pa. (AP) - A former Mercyhurst College student who smothered her newborn daughter in her Erie campus apartment has been granted parole.

The Erie Times-News reports Thursday (https://bit.ly/1QMZxtC ) that the decision was made Sept. 14. But defense attorney Philip Freidman says Teri Rhodes, now 26, remains in prison while Michigan parole officials arrange to supervise her at her parents’ home in that state.

Rhodes was originally sentenced to nine to 18 years in prison by an Erie County judge after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter. An appeals court found the judge abused his discretion in sentencing Rhodes, and she was re-sentenced to 40 to 80 months in state prison. She’s served about 58 months of that term.

Rhodes was a volleyball player when she hid her pregnancy and killed the baby immediately after birth in August 2007.
