MANAKTO, Minn. (AP) - The father of a Mankato baby severely injured in late August is now charged with hurting the infant.

Thirty-five-year-old Mohamud (moh-HAH’-mood) Hussein Ahmed was charged in Blue Earth County court Wednesday with malicious punishment of a child, plus assault. A judge set bail at $40,000 with conditions.

According to the complaint, the baby was 2 months old on Aug. 29 when his mother called for an ambulance. She told investigators the boy was gasping for breath and unresponsive.

The baby was flown to a Rochester hospital, where X-rays showed numerous fractured ribs and severe injuries to the infant’s brain.

Blue Earth County Attorney Pat McDermott tells KTOE-AM (https://bit.ly/1VsKqGZ ) that doctors also reported the baby had previous injuries.

Ahmed has repeatedly denied any responsibility. He’s due back in court Oct. 8.
