LUCEDALE, Miss. (AP) - George County and Lucedale leaders are teaming up to improve handicap access and sidewalk safety around Courthouse Square.

Mayor Doug Lee tells The Mississippi Press (https://bit.ly/1L6VhoI) the city will provide the labor, and the county will provide the materials.

Work began this month and is expected to be complete within two months.

Crews will install five new handicap access ramps around Courthouse Square, and ADA-compliant ramps will be added to each corner. The south entrance access ramp will be expanded, and a new sidewalk will connect all five access ramps.

Sidewalk improvements will include removing the narrow four-foot-wide sidewalk and pouring a new six-foot-wide sidewalk.

Along with the access and safety improvements, several park benches with concrete pads will be placed around the courthouse with pillar light fixtures for better lighting.
