HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) - A local church plans to tear down an adjacent former hotel property located on the intersection of two of the busiest streets in Hot Springs.

The First United Methodist Church of Hot Springs announced Wednesday that it recently purchased the former Howard Johnson Inn property. The Sentinel-Record (https://bit.ly/1FL5whV ) reports that the church plans to clear the hotel site over the next few months and prepare it for future development.

Crews already are working to clear the site of asbestos and donate salvageable materials to Habitat for Humanity.

The church was established in 1852 and its sanctuary was erected in 1915. Since then, the church has continued to grow and expand its ministries.
