MANTEO, N.C. (AP) - A meeting about a beach nourishment plan for Buxton on Hatteras Island has been postponed because of the approaching storm.

The meeting had been scheduled Thursday.

The National Park Service says the meeting on the environmental assessment of the beach plan will be rescheduled.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released the environmental assessment for public review. The public comment period continues through Oct. 19.

Dare County is seeking a permit from the corps for the dredge-and-fill work needed for the beach nourishment and from the National Park Service for the work that would take place on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

The county wants to pump sand on the beach in front of motels and other private property to protect N.C. Highway 12.
