LOVINGTON, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico State Police are investigating the death of an armed man who was shot by police in Lovington.

State Police spokeswoman Elizabeth Armijo said Thursday that officers Brandon Solomon, Aaron Rodriguez and James Hay all fired their weapons during an encounter with 23-year-old Alejandro Lerma, of Lovington.

According to authorities, the officers were called around 2 p.m. Saturday to a residence where gunfire went off.

They say the officers came across Lerma, who allegedly made statements indicating he had a gun.

They say Lerma refused commands to drop his weapon and was a threat to officers.

Lerma was hit with gunfire and died at a hospital.

Investigators recovered a .45 caliber handgun in his possession.

Armijo says state police have finished interviewing the officers but the investigation is ongoing.
