FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) - A retired Fond du Lac police dog that survived being shot in 2011 has been euthanized after his health declined.

Grendel was the K-9 partner of Fond du Lac Police Officer Ryan Williams. According to a police news release, Williams took Grendel for one last brief training exercise in rural Fond du Lac County before the veterinary appointment.

Williams and Grendel were wounded by gunfire on March 20, 2011, when they responded to the home of a sexual assault suspect. In the ensuing standoff, Officer Craig Birkholz was fatally shot by the suspect, who later died from a self-inflicted gunshot.

Grendel retired in 2014, while Williams remains on the force. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (https://bit.ly/1YPvTtp ) reports Grendel was buried Wednesday in Rienzi Cemetery alongside other area law enforcement police dogs.
